Colour is splashed across the Busan hillside. Ocean blues contrast with warm oranges. Gentle purples clash with lime greens. Salmon pinks flank citrus yellows.

The village of Gamcheon-dong cannot be missed, such is the startling array of hues in which its buildings are painted. Spread across the hill like a vibrantly-coloured patchwork blanket, its bright appearance conceals a dark past.

For most of its history, Gamcheon-dong was a grey, drab and depressed place. It began as a sanctuary for refugees from Seoul and North Korea who were trying to escape the horrors of the country's harrowing war in the 1950s.
