STAY

No other hotel in Napa Valley – or maybe the entire country – can compete with Meadowood when it comes to genuine, heartfelt service and comfort. Over the years, I've had the pleasure of staying here regularly both for business and leisure and can attest to how thoughtful and personalized service becomes for regulars, without ever feeling intrusive. Cloistered among the woods in St. Helena, with miles of hiking trails, three newly renovated pools, a fitness center, croquet lawn and the best spa experience in Napa Valley, Meadowood feels like a country club without an ounce of pretension.

If you prefer a more central location with lots within walking distance, Archer Napa is a great pick in the heart of booming downtown Napa, with the hottest rooftop bar in town. In Yountville, sister properties Vintage House and Hotel Villagio are beloved for their chic but laidback design and proximity to great shopping and dining.

WINE

Visit the hippest new tasting room at Napa Valley at The Prisoner Wine Company in St. Helena. The refurbished industrial compound is quite an iconoclastic design for a winery. Instead of villas and vineyards views, there's distressed wood, chains, macramé ropes, patinaed zinc panels and modular tables and chairs made from aluminum salvaged from a submarine. Wine is stored in shackles behind the bar and designer Richard Von Saal says the bubble mirrors are “reflections of dirty thoughts.” It's perfectly on brand considering The Prisoner has always been one to break the rules with unconventional blends.

As for the wine, they make something for everyone, from champagne method sparkling wine and rosé to their namesake red blend. Across the board, their wines have a velvety texture and luscious fruit. Legions of celebrity fans include Lady Gaga, who stocks The Prisoner backstage at her Vegas residency, and Serena Williams, who poured it at her wedding. Sample the portfolio with crackers and dip in the garden, or settle into The Makery for a more comprehensive food and wine pairing experience that includes A5 Japanese wagyu. No other Napa brand balances quality and mass appeal quite like The Prisoner, working closely with fiercely passionate grape growers like Anna Hickey at Rodgers Vineyards to ensure the wines live up to the hype year after year.

Cabernet lovers looking for the next exclusive cult favorite should visit ADAMVS, a winery that's only been releasing wine since 2014 but has quickly established a stellar reputation among industry insiders. With just 2,000 cases of wine each year, including three cabernet sauvignons and a sauvignon blanc, bottles are only available to members and visitors. Guests at ADAMVS' intimate appointment-only tasting room located in Howell Mountain receive an entirely bespoke experience that might include a tour of the property followed by a wine tasting accompanied by rare French cheese and estate honey.

When Italian immigrant Mario Trinchero uprooted his family from New York and purchased the dilapidated Sutter Home winery in 1948, he could not have foreseen that after decades of slaving away making bulk wine, his son would inadvertently invent white zinfandel, which became the most popular wine in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s.

Today, the Trincheros are the second largest family-owned winery in the country behind Gallo, but it wasn't until 2007 that they finally established a winery with their family name. Trinchero Napa Valley produces more than a dozen single-vineyard estate-grown wines that are only available online and in their St. Helena tasting room. Book the Signature Experience to taste a vertical of their flagship cabernet sauvignon paired with food in the family's private wine library, or try a horizontal tasting of four single-vineyard cabernet sauvignons from different appellations.
